A Morphometric Comparison of Gray Treefrogs, Hyla chrysoscelis and H. versicolor, from Ohio
Thirteen morphometric characters were compared between two cryptic species of gray treefrogs from Ohio. Discriminant function analysis using snout-vent length, shank length, and thigh length correctly classified 76.7% of diploid Hyla chrysoscelis and tetraploid//. versicolor. Ohio diploids are more similar in size to those in Texas than to those of Michigan and Wisconsin or southeastern states....
متن کاملSexually dimorphic effects of melatonin on brain arginine vasotocin immunoreactivity in green treefrogs (Hyla cinerea).
Arginine vasotocin (AVT) and its mammalian homologue, arginine vasopressin (AVP), regulate a variety of social and reproductive behaviors, often with complex species-, sex- and context-dependent effects. Despite extensive evidence documenting seasonal variation in brain AVT/AVP, relatively few studies have investigated the environmental and/or hormonal factors mediating these seasonal changes. ...
متن کاملGeographic variation in energy storage and physiological responses to freezing in the gray treefrogs Hyla versicolor and H. chrysoscelis.
The physiological responses supporting freeze tolerance in anurans are well known, but the evolution of this trait remains little studied. This is the first common-garden study of geographic variation in cryoprotective responses to freezing and the degree of freeze tolerance. We studied the gray treefrogs (Hyla versicolor and H. chrysoscelis) from sympatric sites in Minnesota, Indiana and Misso...
متن کاملThe effects of call-like masking diminish after nightly exposure to conspecific choruses in green treefrogs (Hyla cinerea).
One of the major difficulties encountered by animals that select mates using acoustic signals is discriminating individual calls from the background noise generated by other conspecifics. Reducing the effects of conspecific masking could improve discrimination of individual calls from background noise. We used auditory evoked potentials to investigate the effects of forward masking on the respo...
متن کاملFrequency channel-dependent selectivity for temporal call characteristics in gray treefrogs, Hyla versicolor.
Sensory receptors transmit information on multiple stimulus dimensions. Much remains to be understood about how the processing of different signal characteristics is partitioned and integrated in different areas of the nervous system. Amphibian hearing involves two morphologically distinct inner-ear organs that process different components of the frequency spectrum. Many anuran signals contain ...
